Life Rx

We can get prescriptions for just about anything that ails us. We get prescriptions for a pharmaceutical from our doctor, an exercise routine from our trainer, a nutrition plan from the dietician, the list is quite exhaustive. But how often do we actually do the thing that is prescribed? And why is it, even when we KNOW that it might be good for us, we just cannot bring ourselves to do it?

We live in a state of constant mental conundrum; a part of us wants to be told what to do, and a part of us doesn’t want to do what we are told. We live in a state of information overload on what we “should” be doing and then get overwhelmed and throw our hands up and say, “Forget it, I’m not doing it!” (Whatever “it” is!). Somewhere between total submission and total rebellion is our intuition. Unfortunately, our upbringing and our society have both dictated that our intuition is not to be trusted. Babies know when they are hungry and full . Parents, out of concern, will force more food, “one more bite for Mommy”, or “take 3 more bites and then you can get down and play”. But our bodies are brilliant and intelligent. That baby will spit the food out or shake their head or push the spoon away. We are teaching our children to not trust themselves.

Our society tells us that the only way to eat is to follow the ————————diet (Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Paleo, Whole 30, Keto, Mediterranean) as if we are unable to know how to feed ourselves. We need to “Detox” to be clean. We need to work out a certain way or move a certain way or dress a certain way or live a certain way or think a certain way and soon enough, we are so inundated with what we think we are supposed to do that we have no idea what will serve us best. We’ve lost our discernment and our ability to know what works best for us.

When I work with clients, I often see people struggle to come back to themselves. They want to be told what to do and when I ask them what their intuition tells them, when I ask them what would make the most sense for them, there is almost a sigh of relief. “Wait, you mean, I can TRUST myself to know what to do?” “How to feed myself and how to move?” The most lovely men and women tell me with tears in their eyes that they are worried if they go back to eating meat (sustainable and grass fed, of course!), how their community or loved ones may perceive it. Clients who are exhausted because of excessive exercise and restrictive food rules who are literally starving for rest and nourishment. All the while they are looking outside of themselves for the answers, when what they need is to gather the tools to find it within. And the relief that comes with utilizing those tools is profound.

So in the light of coming back to ourselves and trusting our intuition, here is the Life Rx. Start with simply learning to listen. Sit down and close your eyes and notice the busy-ness of your mind. Notice the constant push and pull. Start there, at the beginning. For 2 full minutes, just notice the noise in your mind. No need to judge, just watch. The part of you that is watching is the part of you that KNOWS what the next right thing to do actually is. This is how you begin to develop the awareness to tap into what is behind all the spinning, and where the answers that you are seeking can be found.

This is your first prescription; do it daily for maximum benefits. Let me know how it goes.

In your best health and with love,

Betsy
